LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (WDCW) – An American Airlines flight destined for Phoenix was forced to land at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) on Saturday after a passenger’s device reportedly caught fire.

American Airlines Flight 357 landed safely at Dulles, located just outside of Washington, D.C., at around 11:50 a.m. after the crew reported a fire in one of the passenger rows, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

In a statement to Nexstar’s WDCW, an American Airlines spokesperson said smoke was spotted coming from “a customer’s device” and that the crew “quickly contained” it before landing.

“We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this caused and thank our crew for their professionalism,” the airline said in a statement.

Officials did not specify what kind of device the customer had or what caused it to begin to smoke.

Responders greeted the aircraft at Dulles, per standard procedure, to help passengers deboard the plane, American Airlines said. The passengers were accommodated on alternative flights, according to the carrier.
